Colorado 2010

Spent 3 of the last 5 days out in Winter Park.

Thursday - Left St Cloud with Charlie around 1 and drove to North Platte, got a beer and a room and slept for a few hours.

Friday - Left North Platte and got to Winter Park around noon. Met up with Mike (he flew in that morning) and had lunch and went for a short ride before our condo was ready. We got settled in and turned in.

Saturday - Got up and drove to Winter park resort to get our race packets then back to the condo to change and ride to the race start (just west of our condo a few miles) in Fraser. Had poor race, two rear flats, but love the race route so I had a blast. Hung around for the awards and had a few beers before riding back to the condo. We met up with My sister Angela, her husband Brock and their two boys for dinner.

Sunday - Brock joined Charlie, Mike and I for a ride up to Rollins pass and back. A little lunch and we went back out for a ride on the Idle Wild trails. Dinner and then out for a few at the Pub.

Monday - Mike left for the airport early and Charlie and I rode up Fool Creek in the morning had lunch and then hit Trestle bike park for some down hill action. Angela had us over for breakfast for dinner that evening.

Tuesday - Charlie and I left early and headed home.

Charlie brought his camera on the trip so I should have pictures by mid December sometime.

Walker - Itasca Ride

On Saturday Bryon and I made our mountain bike trek from my parents house in Walker to his family's cabin on the west side of Itasca S.P. Our route was a little different than the last two times we have done it and we managed to trim it down to 50 miles and 4 1/2 hours of ride time. Back in 2007 we covered about 60 miles and it took us over 6 1/2 hours as we got lost and had to back-track acouple of times.

Rain showers in the morning had us convinced it was going to be a wet and sloppy ride but other than one muddy section it was suprisingly dry.

Our route went from Walker through Chippewa National Forest on Forest service roads and 4-wheeler trails. Then we crossed into Paul Bunyan State Forest on some old logging roads and more 4-wheeler trails. Then we followed the Steamboat forest road to the west edge of PBSF and on to Karamel forest road, Pine lake FR and Lake Alice trail up to the "town" of Lake Alice where we had a great pulled pork sandwich and a beer at Bad to the Bone BBQ. We filled our water bottles and headed out on TH 200 for the couple miles to Itasca S.P. There we rode the bike trail around the park then the snowmobile trail to the Anchor Matson road to the cabin.

Here is a link to our route in my Garmin activities Walker to Itasca

We headed back to Walker and met up with my brother Phil and went out Musky fishing for a couple hours. Phil caught a few small northern pike and we saw acouple of Muskies but didn't hook any.

Phil and I went back out Sunday morning before I headed back home and he caught this nice 27" Walleye on his Musky twitch bait.

We again caught a number of small northern pike and saw Muskies following our baits but no Muskies in the boat. Maybe next weekend!

I must be crazy!

I send in an e-mail to those in charge of the Chequamegon 100 for an entry almost hoping I would get turned down. But no, I got in. So on May 22nd I am off to do my first 100 mile mountain bike race.
I would feel better about it if I had been riding as much as I was in March but the last 3 weeks I have not put much time in on the bike. If nothing else I will be a nice long ride on sweet trails.

LAME!

Our Hockey team got screwed by the refs last night. They didn't make an icing call and let play go on and about 30 seconds later we scored. Then they called icing took away our goal brought the face-off down in front of our net! The other team tied the game and later went on to win.

Not sure I would want the pressure of being a Ref but isn't being decisive rule #1 of being a Ref.
Here they are discussing the play...

Vasa Baby!

I really had my doubts about doing the Vasaloppet Sunday. I was really pumped for it in August when I signed up but up until race day I had only been on my skis twice for a total of less than 4 hours and each ski ended whith big blisters on my arches. With the Amo's offer to drive and the fact that I already paid for it and the conditions and weather looking to be good I went.

Last year I skied the 35ks in 2:15:57 so my goal for this year was a slow 2:30:00 and going in I felt it would be a tough goal to hit.

It took me about 1/2 of the 35k race to get comfortable on my skis part due to lack of time skiing and part due to my boots coming loose. I stopped 3 time to re-tighten my boots and the third time I pulled them as tight as I could and tied a big knot in the laces, it took me 15 minutes after the race to get my boots off.

I hit the 1/2 way point and really felt good. There was less traffic ahead of me and I was passing skiers instead of being passed (that always feels good). My boots were finally staying tight, although my left arch was burning, and as I looked at my watch I was supprised to see only 1:07 had elapsed so I pushed a little harder. The last 10k was a blur as I tried to focus on getting a good glide on each stride. I crossed the line in 2:15:23, 34 seconds faster than last year.

Thanks to Amos for driving, Stones for helping at the start and finish, my wife for letting me go on Valentines Day and the guys at Revolution cycle and ski for making my skis very fast.

A Wild B-Day

Saturday Tami, Brett and Andrea took me down to the Wild game against Phili, hit a couple bars before hand...

Found a Flyers fan to pummel, their captain none the less

Just like this guy would

Right after I took this picture he turned and glared right at me with the meanest look, I almost peed my pants. After the game a couple more bars and a midnight snack at Kincaid's, yum.

Proof

For you Non Believers here is proof of Tami and my horse shoe greatness... the losers...
and the winners.
